Preview, predictions

With Poland already being knocked out of the competition we expect France to beat them comfortably in the final group game and finish top of the group. This would leave the Netherlands and Austria to battle it out for the remaining automatic qualifying position. However, it is likely that both countries make it through to the round of 16 regardless of the result as they are both well placed to qualify as a top third-place side.

France may use this game as an opportunity to make some changes to their starting lineup to keep everybody fresh for the next round of the competition. Didier Deschamps may also decide to give Kylian Mbappe some minutes to see how he gets on following his nose break suffered in their opening game versus Austria. Poland will want to come away from the tournament with some pride, so they will try their best to get some points on the board to give the traveling supporters something to cheer.

The other game in Group D is a fascinating fixture between two in-form nations. The Netherlands will consider themselves unlucky to have not come away with a win against France last time out as Xavi Simons controversially had a goal disallowed for offside. On the whole, a draw wasn’t a bad result at all considering they were up against one of the favourites to win the tournament.

Austria are coming off an impressive win against Poland and will be confident they can come away with a positive result yet again. If they avoid defeat in Berlin it should be enough to cement their place in the round of 16. There is also a scenario in which Austria could finish top of the group, only if they win and Poland manages to pull off an upset against the French, but this is very unlikely. We predict that this match will end in a draw.
