Preview, predictions

After another poor performance against Slovenia, England has been handed one of the more favourable draws in the round of 16, with opponents Slovakia. England would have faced the Netherlands if it wasn’t for Georgia’s win against Portugal on Wednesday.

Gareth Southgate will have plenty of decisions to make in the build-up to Sunday’s game. Conor Gallagher failed to impress in the midfield and was replaced at halftime by Kobbie Mainoo, who made an immediate impact, adding some control in the centre of the pitch. Many fans will now expect Mainoo to start against Slovakia after his impressive display.

The same will be said about Cole Palmer who finally got some minutes against Slovenia. Within twenty minutes he created several chances and almost scored a goal towards the end. Bukayo Saka could be the one to make way for Palmer on the right-hand side of the attack.

We are also waiting to hear if Phil Foden will be available to play as he flew back to England on Wednesday to welcome the birth of his third child. If Foden is not ready then Anthony Gordon will be waiting in the wings to add some much-needed width to the left-hand side.

Slovakia can not be written off as we have seen them upset the odds already by beating Belgium in their opening group game. They qualified as a best third-placed team with just three points. We expect England to get through this fixture without too much trouble.

In the evening match, one of the tournament favorites, Spain is in action against Georgia. Spain is the only nation in the competition to win all three games and is the only nation that hasn’t conceded a single goal yet. Luis de la Fuente was allowed to rest several key players against Albania as they had already finished in first place in their group, which means he will have a fresher squad available to him.

Georgia is coming off an impressive win over group winners Portugal. Portugal did rest multiple players but many did not envisage Georgia coming away with all three points. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was again the main man for Willy Sagnol’s side, scoring early on and threatening the opposition throughout the match. As good as Georgia looked against Portugal, we can’t see anything other than a Spanish win on Sunday.
