Match preview, predictions
France is many people’s favorite to win this year’s tournament. Manager Didier Deschamps hopes to become the second person to win the competition as a player and manager, after German Berti Vogts. He has been in charge of the national side since 2012, leading his country to three out of five possible finals.
Deschamps has put together a squad with a mix of youth and experience. His decision to recall veteran midfielder N’golo Kante was a surprise to everyone, and the former Chelsea man may even start the opening fixture on Monday. Elsewhere, Aurelien Tchouameni is not expected to be risked as he has only recently returned to full training. Marcus Thuram is expected to partner Kylian Mbappe up front.
Austria, now managed by Ralf Rangnick will know that they will be up against it in their opening fixture but we know that the manager will not make it easy for his opponents. He has turned the Austrian side into a cohesive unit recently, producing some good results in preparation for the tournament – most noticeably beating Germany 2-0 back in November.
His team will be without key defender David Alaba who has an ACL injury and did not make the squad. It will be interesting to see who gets the nod up front between Marco Arnautovic and Freiburg’s Michael Gregoritsch. We predict that France will come away with a narrow win in Dusseldorf.
