Preview, predictions

Scotland holds their destiny in their own hands after picking up a crucial point against Switzerland. A win would see them realistically finish third in the group and as a result, qualify for the next round as one of the four best third-placed teams. Steve Clarke will fancy his side’s chances against a Hungarian side that are yet to pick up a point.

The Scotts will be without defender Kieran Tierney who has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament with a hamstring injury picked up against Switzerland. With the new format, there is a small chance that Hungary can still qualify with a win so they will still be fighting until the end to try and go through as a third-placed team. We predict that Scotland will get a narrow win and progress to the round of 16

Host nation Germany are already through to the next round but they will want to make sure that they finish top of group A. If Switzerland wins they will finish second on six points and as a result, will probably face tougher opposition in the round of 16 stage.

Julian Nagelsmann and his team have looked comfortable in both matches so far, only conceding one goal which was an own goal scored by Antonio Rudiger. As they have already qualified it may be an opportunity for the manager to use some of his other squad members to keep everyone fresh, so the likes of Niclas Fullkrug and Leroy Sane may be handed their first starts of the competition.

The Swiss are undefeated in their opening two games and should not be underestimated by Germany. They have pretty much qualified for the next stage but will want to challenge the hosts for the top spot in the group. Murat Yakin’s decision to start Xherdan Shaqiri against Scotland was a stroke of genius as the forward scored a superb goal to level the score in Cologne. We predict that this match will finish as a draw.
