Preview, predictions

After their late heroics last time out against Slovakia Gareth Southgate’s side is up against an in-form Switzerland side that easily disposed of Italy in their round of 16 fixture.

It was another lackluster display from England as they left it late to take the match into extra time before Harry Kane nodded home the winner. There are defensive issues heading into the upcoming game with Marc Guehi being ruled out due to suspension. This will force the manager to deploy a new defender into the heart of the defense and potentially change the formation entirely.

Reports are circulating that Ezri Konsa will step in for the suspended Guehi and that England may change to playing three at the back. This would mean Kyle Walker would move into a more central role and Trent Alexander-Arnold may play as a right-wing back. As a result, a player further forward would have to be sacrificed, so it will be interesting to see who will miss out if a new formation is utilized.

Switzerland are coming off an impressive win over the defending champions Italy, keeping a clean sheet in the process. They completely dominated the game from start to finish and will pose more than a threat to England’s makeshift defense.

Murat Yakin’s team will be aware that their nation has never been beyond this stage of this tournament before, so it is a massive opportunity for them to create a piece of history for the country. Full-back Silvan Wildmer is back after his suspension but the manager may be tempted to name an unchanged side considering how well his side played last time out. We predict a close game on Saturday with the Swiss just edging past their opponents.

The last quarter-final sees the Netherlands take on Turkiye with the winners setting up a semi-final date against England or Switzerland.

Ronald Koeman’s team finally produced the performance the fans had been waiting for in their versus Romania. The Dutch were very impressive in all aspects of the game and dominated throughout. The midfield and attack linked up well which led to several big chances being created. Forward Cody Gakpo contributed yet again with another goal and assist putting him as the joint top goalscorer of the tournament with three goals.

We expect the manager to name a similar side on Saturday, however, Donny Malen should come in for Steve Bergwijn after impressing off the bench against Romania.

Turkey earned their spot in the quarter-finals via a hard-fought victory against an impressive Austria side. In a close game, it was Merih Demiral’s double that was the difference between the two sides as the defender punished Austria from two set pieces. Vincenzo Montella’s side had to hold on to their narrow lead and saw through a nervy ending to the game. Goalkeeper Mert Gunok deserves a special mention as he denied Austria a late equalizer in stoppage time with an unbelievable save.

Turkey will welcome back captain Hakan Calhanoglu after he missed out previously due to a suspension. On a negative note, the hero from the last game Merih Demiral will be unavailable after he was banned for two games following a controversial goal celebration for his second goal. We predict the Netherlands will come out on top in this tie and advance into the semi-finals.
