Preview, predictions

England are just one win away from reaching the final of the European Championships for the second tournament in a row. Standing in their way are Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands side who are hoping to make an appearance in the final for the first time since the country won the competition in 1988.

Gareth Southgate’s side won their quarter-final tie against Switzerland on penalties in a closely fought game. The Three Lions played much better than in their previous games and will look to kick on now after their penalty heroics. Luke Shaw returned from injury, coming off the bench to help his side gain stability and width on the left-hand side. Shaw has stated that he feels ready to start so it will be interesting to see if the manager chooses to risk the full-back from the beginning.

Along with the decision to start Shaw, Southgate has to decide whether to stick with the formation he deployed against the Swiss or revert to playing four at the back. Marc Guehi is available for selection again after serving his one-game ban, however, Ezri Konsa did impress in his first start as his replacement.

The Dutch had to come from behind to get through their quarter-final match versus Turkey in Berlin. Goals from Stefan De Vrij and an own goal forced by Cody Gakpo were enough to see off a Turkish side that put up a valiant effort on the night. The introduction of Wout Weghorst at halftime by Ronald Koeman proved to be very effective as the tall striker disrupted the Turkish defense constantly and allowed his team to play more directly. He will now push for a spot in the starting eleven in Wednesday’s huge game against England.

We predict England will have enough on the night to beat the Netherlands in ninety minutes.
