Preview, predictions
The Netherlands qualified for the round of 16 as a best third-placed side from Group D. Ronald Koeman will be disappointed after suffering a late loss at the hands of Austria in their final group game. His side are yet to find any real form and look very vulnerable defensively. We expect the manager to revert to a more familiar lineup by bringing back the likes of Xavi Simons and Jeremie Frimpong from the start.
Opponents Romania surprisingly came top of Group E, pipping the other nations to the top spot thanks to the amount of goals scored. It was the 3-0 win over Ukraine in the end that helped seal their fate. This is the first time Romania has advanced from the group stage since Euro 2000, so regardless of the result on Tuesday the country and their fans should be immensely proud of what they have achieved. Edward Lordanescu will be forced into making a change at left-back as defender Nicusor Bancu is suspended after accumulating too many yellow cards.
The Dutch are a shadow of the sides they have had in previous years and Romania will definitely pose a threat, but on this occasion, we predict that the Netherlands will edge past them to advance to the quarter-finals.
Group A winners Austria have been the surprise package of the tournament. Ralf Rangnick’s side managed to come top of a group that included France and the Netherlands, playing some amazing football in the process. Their fearless yet organised approach has left teams constantly overwhelmed and they will no doubt be a tough challenge for any country on their day. Austria aims to reach their first-ever European Championship quarter-final where they will face the winner of Romania and the Netherlands.
Standing in Austria’s way is Turkey – another side that has impressed so far in this year’s tournament. They won two out of their three games in the group stage, scoring five goals along the way. Last-minute heroics from substitute striker Cenk Tosun earned Vincenzo Montella and his side their place in the last 16 stages of the competition. If they are to progress any further they will have to do it without their captain and most influential player, Hakan Calhanoglu, who misses out due to suspension. It is a big loss for Turkey as he adds great experience to such a youthful side, so it will be interesting to see how they manage to adapt in his absence.
This promises to be a fascinating contest between two exciting teams. We predict that Austria will qualify and earn their place in the next round.
