The Grand National Festival kicks off on Thursday with four Grade 1 races, the pick of which is the William Hill Bowl. This sees the return of Shishkin, who along with many of Nicky Henderson’s stable, was withdrawn from the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He is up against Gordon Elliott’s Gerri Colombe who was second in this Gold Cup and is favourite for this race. Shishkin can show if the stable has now recovered and on that basis is our selection.
On Friday the big race is the Melling Chase which pits Protektorat and Envoi Allen, the first two in the Ryanair at Cheltenham, against each other again. Take Envoi Allen under Rachel Blackmore to reverse the placings.
Can Corach Rambler retain his Grand National crown? He is favourite followed in the betting by two of Willie Mullins’s horses, I Am Maximus and Meetingofthewaters. Stable jockey Paul Townsend has chosen the former, but you can never write off any Mullins horse. With two thirds of the field trained in Ireland an Irish winner more than likely. Our selection is Vanillier who finished second last year and Nassalam the outsider each way.
Selections:
Thursday: Shishkin 3/1
Friday: Envoi Allen 5/1
Saturday: The Grand National: Vanillier 11/1, Nassalam (ew) 33/1
