The finale of the jumps season sees Willie Mullins looking to become the first Irish trainer to be crowned British Champion trainer since Vincent O’Brien. Mullins won the two major races at Cheltenham, The Gold Cup and The Champion Hurdle plus the Grand National and enjoys a healthy lead over England’s Dan Skelton. But he has been taking no chances as he has had two winners this week in minor races at Ffos Las and Ludlow where the winning prize money was less than £5,000. The prize money on offer at Sandown is considerably more at £670,000, but as Mullins only leads Skelton by £190,000, it is not a foregone conclusion.
The race of the day is Celebration Chase (15:00) when Nicky Henderson’s Jonbon, who missed Cheltenham, but won at Aintree and won this race last year, takes on Mullins’s El Fabiolo, who was pulled up at Cheltenham. El Fabiolo is favourite, but expect a tight and exciting race with the Irish horse to prevail. Dan Skelton’s best chance is in the first race with Be Aware, but that won’t give him enough to overhaul Willie Mullins, who would be deserved winner of the top British trainer of the jumps season.
