Event preview, predictions

The BBC will have extensive multi-court coverage over the next two weeks on BBC iPlayer, so you can choose which matches you want to follow at all times.

Defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz will be one of the favorites to win the tournament again. He has rediscovered some of the form that saw him lift the trophy last year by winning the French Open in May. He has now won three grand slams and will be hungry for more. Alcaraz plays qualifier Mark Lajal first on Centre Court tomorrow.

Standing in his way will be rival Jannik Sinner, who is the number one seed going into this year’s championships. The world number one is in the same half of the draw as Alcaraz and the pair can potentially meet at the semi-final stage. Sinner takes on Yannick Hanfmann on Monday.

We cannot forget about veteran and second-seed Novak Djokovic. Many are surprised he is even playing at Wimbledon this year as he has recently recovered from knee surgery. The Serb has stated that he is pain-free and raring to go so he will still be a major threat to the other contenders. Djokovic faces Vit Kopriva on Tuesday in his first-round match.

UK fans are still eagerly awaiting an update on whether or not Andy Murray will be competing this year. The Brit underwent surgery to remove a cyst on his back recently and still hasn’t confirmed whether or not he will go ahead with his match. If he does decide to play, he is up against world number 38, Tomas Machac.

Our pick for this year’s championship is Jannik Sinner. We believe it is his time to get his hands on the Wimbledon crown.

As for the women, Iga Swiatek will be hoping her form this year will stand her in good stead to finally win her first Wimbledon trophy. The world number one has been impressive this year, winning multiple tournaments including a fourth French Open title. However, she has never made it beyond the quarter-final stage before, so she will be highly motivated to go all the way this year. Swiatek faces Sofia Kenin in her first-round match.

Second seed Coco Gauff is another favorite to claim the trophy this year in London. Despite never going further than the fourth round at Wimbledon the 20-year-old has had a very successful season on the tour, winning her first grand slam at the US Open back in September. Even though the grass court is considered her weakest surface she knows she has all the tools to succeed. Coco plays fellow American Caroline Dolehide on Monday on Centre Court.

The likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, and defending champion Marketa Vondrousova are also in with a shout of challenging for the prestigious trophy. Eyes will be on Britain’s Katie Boulter as she takes to the court on Tuesday when she faces Tatjana Maria.

It is always hard to predict the women’s winner as it is a bit of a lottery, but this year we are going with Coco Gauff to win her first Wimbledon title.
