Olympiacos vs Aston Villa preview, prediction
A depleted Aston Villa squad travels to Piraeus looking to overturn a 4-2 deficit from the first leg, as they have it all to do to secure a return to Athens later this month for the final.
Emi Martinez has travelled with his teammates and will hope to feature, but it remains to be seen how many of their key figures are still missing as they’ve battled injury setbacks all year with Tyrone Mings, Emiliano Buendia, Boubacar Kamara, Jacob Ramsey set to miss out, while Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Nicolo Zaniolo could yet be ruled out too.
What Villa have shown this season and throughout their European campaign thus far is that they are capable of scoring goals. Led by Ollie Watkins, back them to find the back of the net and apply real pressure to Olympiacos to make a game of it despite facing a fiery atmosphere from the home supporters.
It’s hard to not see Douglas Luiz’s late penalty miss at Villa Park coming back to haunt them, as it could really prove to be a decisive moment in the tie.
Had the Premier League side been at full strength and not evidently be running out of steam as their performance against Brighton on Sunday suggested, there would be real confidence in backing them to turn this around. The value is of course with that outcome given the scenario, and so we’re still going with a genius night of coaching from Emery on his favourite stage in Europe and his players digging deep to seal Villa’s place in the Final on May 29.
